Maddux out, Lovullo and Lamont added to the horse race

As the whole Northeast has heard by now, Mike Maddux pulled out of the running for the Red Sox managerial position yesterday due to family reasons.  There are conflicting reports that he still intends to interview with the Cubs tomorrow but nevertheless the process moves on and their are two new names to add into the mix.

Current Toronto Blue Jays 1st base coach Torey Lovullo will interview for the position on Friday.  Lovullo is the former manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox before he was pilfered by the Blue Jays prior to the 2011 season.  Lovullo managed the PawSox for one year and Red Sox management were not happy to see him taken away.  He’s a definite dark horse candidate and it seems like Maddux has left a void at the top of the search to match up with Dale Sveum, the prospective favorite who had been theoretically competing with Maddux for that pole position.

Gene Lamont is an odd case.  Like Pete Mackanin before him you question the age (64) and the fact that he hasn’t held a head job since the 2000 season.  He does have Boston ties, he was the bench coach under former manager Jimy Williams, but he hardly seems to fit in the organization’s philosophy.  Anything can happen, and you can’t dismiss him because he did get called in for an interview, but I don’t see how he fits in to the top of the list here.  As I typed Peter Abraham for the Globe tweets that Lamont could be looked at as a possible bench coach/mentor for one of these younger managers (Alomar, Lovullo, maybe a Dave Martinez or Ryne Sandberg if they enter the mix).  That could make a lot more sense.

I expect another interview, maybe two in the beginning part of next week and a decision before Christmas.  In the meantime we’ll hear from Alomar, Lovullo, and Lamont by the end of this week.
